Collaboration

Through this collaboration, we provide experienced offshore professionals who represent the client and contribute to the safe, efficient and high-quality execution of offshore activities. Their expertise supports operational oversight, HSE compliance and effective coordination between all parties involved. Porthos is the first large-scale CO₂ transport and storage project to be developed within the European Union.

How Porthos Works

The project will transport captured CO₂ from industries in the Port of Rotterdam through onshore and offshore pipelines, before permanently storing it in depleted gas fields beneath the North Sea. Once operational, Porthos is expected to store approximately 2.5 million tonnes of CO₂ annually for a period of 15 years. This represents an important contribution to reducing industrial emissions, achieving the Netherlands’ climate ambitions and accelerating the energy transition.

Porthos is designed to store approximately 2.5 million tonnes of CO₂ per year for 15 years, representing a total storage volume of around 37 million tonnes.

CARBON STORAGE

Building the Future of Carbon Storage

The project brings together existing offshore assets, new transport infrastructure and specialist technical expertise. Former gas production facilities and wells are being repurposed for CO₂ storage, demonstrating how existing North Sea infrastructure can play an important role in the energy transition.

Beyond its initial storage capacity, Porthos also provides a foundation for the future development of carbon capture and storage networks in the Netherlands and across Northwest Europe. Its shared infrastructure model can support additional industrial users and contribute to the creation of a broader cross-border CO₂ transport and storage market.


Platform conversion

The P18-A platform was previously used for offshore natural-gas production. Gas production ended in March 2025, after which the platform, wells and associated gas fields were transferred from TAQA to Porthos in May 2025. The platform is now being converted from a production facility into a dedicated CO₂ injection platform.

From Capture to Storage Beneath the North Sea

The participating industrial companies capture the CO₂ at their own production facilities and deliver it to a shared collection pipeline. From there, Porthos transports the CO₂ through an approximately 30-kilometre pipeline across the Rotterdam port area to a compressor station on the Maasvlakte.

After compression, the CO₂ is transported through an offshore pipeline to the existing P18-A platform, located approximately 20 kilometres off the Dutch coast. The platform and former gas-production wells are being converted for reuse, allowing the CO₂ to be injected into depleted reservoirs at a depth of approximately three to four kilometres beneath the North Sea seabed.
